Have No Fear

“The fever left him yesterday, about one in the afternoon.” The father realized that just at that time Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live,” and he and his whole household came to believe. This was the second sign Jesus did when he came to Galilee from Judea. - John 4:52-54

I recently hosted a workshop on Accessibility in Liturgy and Public Prayer Spaces as part of my final project for my graduate program in Pastoral Ministries at Santa Clara University. It was the first time I hosted a workshop on two interests that are close to my heart: disability advocacy and ministry in the church. Two years ago, I would never have imagined the work that God has called me to do now–speaking for inclusion of parishioners and clergy members with disabilities.

In the show, The Chosen, Jesus reminds Little James that He trusts him with the work of spreading the gospel. Surely Jesus could heal James if Jesus wants to, but in this case, Jesus doesn’t; the faith of James is strong. Before the workshop, my nerves were up in the air, even though I have had experience with a TEDx talk. As the workshop proceeded, I felt the Holy Spirit rise within me, and I let go of my fear.

I led the workshop participants in a roundtable discussion about ways the Church could be more welcoming. Forty-five minutes passed quickly before I ended the workshop with what Pope Francis said: “The Church is a field hospital.” Indeed, it is a place where our desolate souls are consoled through faith and community who believe along with us.

As we continue our Lenten journey, let us turn to our faith for healing and strength when facing our fears. Let Jesus’ tender love embrace us on our journey to get closer to him.
